When multiplying monomials, their coefficients are multiplied and the exponents of the variables (letters) are added.

Important!

Remember:

a^{n} \cdot a^{m} = a^{n + m}

Example:

Multiply the monomials:

3 a^{2} b \cdot 2 a b^{3}

1) To make the expression clearer, rearrange the factors.

3 a^{2} b \cdot 2 a b^{3}

= (3 \cdot 2) \cdot (a^{2} \cdot a^{1}) \cdot (b^{1} \cdot b^{3})

2) Multiply the coefficients and add the exponents of the variables (letters).

(3 \cdot 2) \cdot (a^{2 + 1}) \cdot (b^{1 + 3}) = 6 \cdot (a^{3}) \cdot (b^{4}) = 6 a^{3} b^{4}
