- A red data book is created to identify and protect species that are about to be extinct.
- The local sub-species present in a territory is also given in the red data book.
- It is used for monitoring programmes and observational studies on the habitats.
- The book classifies species into three categories - threatened, not threatened, and unknown.
- Book has the information on why the species has become extinct.
- It is maintained internationally through International Union for Conservation of Nature (\(IUCN\)).
- India maintains a Red Data Book for plants and animals present in India.
- It is used to evaluate the risk of the species globally.
Example:
Some of the endangered animal species present in the Red data book include flying squirrel, blackbuck, Indian giant squirrel, snow leopard, one horned rhinoceros, himalayan musk deer etc.
Category and the meanings of the titles
Migration in birds:
To escape the extreme winter season, the birds migrate from other parts of the world to warmer regions like India. Birds migrate to a warmer place when the winter begins and return when the winter is over.
Migration in birds is for laying eggs as the weather in the natural habitat will be very cold and inhospitable. Siberian cranes travel from Siberia to places like Bharatpur in Rajasthan, Sultanpur in Haryana, and other wetlands of the Northeast part of India.

How do birds travel to a particular location?
- The migratory birds fly high, which use the wind flow, and the cold conditions allow them to disperse the heat generated by the flight muscles.
- The birds also have a sense of direction. Some birds also use landmarks to guide them.
- Some birds use the sun as a guide during the daytime and the stars during the night.
- Some of them use the magnetic field of the earth to find the direction.
