It is a gaseous plant hormone that also acts as a growth inhibitor. It is involved in the maturing and ripening of fruits. Hence, most ethylene is synthesized during the development of fruits such as apples, bananas, and melons.

Physiological effects of ethylene:
  • Ethylene is a gas that promotes the ripening of fruits such as tomato, apple, mango, banana, etc.
  • It inhibits the elongation of the stem and root of dicots.
  • Ethylene accelerates the senescence of leaves and flowers.
  • It stimulates the formation of an abscission zone in leaves, flowers, and fruits, leading to premature shedding.
  • It breaks the dormancy of buds, seeds and storage organs.
