2. Introduction to matter

Take a look around you; you will notice a lot of objects of various shapes, sizes, and textures. The water we drink, the food we eat, the cloths we wear and the air we breathe, everything is matter which has its own volume and mass.
 
According to our ancient Indian philosophers, every living and non-living thing is made up of five basic elements known as the Panch Tatva:Air, Earth, Fire, Sky, and Water. These are the five fundamental elements.
 
The matter is classified into two comprehensive categories:

Pure substances are further classified into elements and compounds.
