1. The rule.
So + "verb" + "somebody" is used if you want to say that a positive statement is also true for somebody else.
2. How to write the verb correctly?
- If we have "am / is / are (not)" in the statement, we use "am / is / are" according to "somebody" in the reply:
Dean: I am far from home.
a) So are we.
b) So is he.
- If we have "have / has (not)" (for possessions) in the statement, we use "have / has" according to "somebody" in the reply:
Zara: I have got an excellent phone.
A: So has she.
B: So have my parents.
- If we have "can(not)" in the statement, we use "can" in the reply:
Maria: I can play the violin.
I: So can Tim.
Maria: I can't play the guitar.
I: Neither can Tom.
- If we have other verbs - (don't / doesn't go), do, like, play, etc. and have (for actions) - in the statement, we use "do / does" in the reply:
Jessica: My friend helps her parents at the weekend.
A: So does my friend.
B: So do my friends.
Wendy: We have lunch together.
I: So do they.
Important!
Note! We do not write "not" in the replies with "Neither"!
3. Some examples with different verbs.
"do / does"
Ellen: You go to parties every week.
I: So does my sister.
Ron: I don't wake up early at the weekend.
I: Neither do my brothers.
"am / is / are"
Alice: I am a student.
I: So is Alex.
Martin: I am not busy in the evening.
I: Neither are we.
"can"
Molly: I can speak French.
I: So can my friend.
Nick: My dad can't speak Italian.
I: Neither can he.
"have / has" (possession)
Amelie: They have got a dog.
I: So has she.
Frank: I haven't got a house.
I: Neither have they.
Important!
Note!
If we speak about actions we cannot use "have" in the reply. We should use "do".
"have / has" (action)
Sonia: We have barbeques on Saturdays.
I: So do my parents.
Tom: I don't have coffee for breakfast.
I: Neither does Eric.
