"Princess September" by Somerset Maugham is the abridged version of the short story "Princess September and the Nightingale".

Set in Siam (modern-day Thailand), the story revolves around a Siamese princess named September.

September's love for the parrot increases day by day after receiving an encaged parrot as a gift. She grows sad upon her pet parrot's sudden death. One fine day, a talented singing bird chances upon befriending September. Upon her envious sisters' misadvise, September sets on to trap the nightingale. The implications of getting shut within closed barriers inflicted upon the nightingale's creative mindset form the rest of the story.
