A fraction is a number representing a part of the whole. A whole may be a single object or group of objects.
 
A fraction can be written as NumeratorDenominator.
Types of fraction:
  1. Proper fraction
  2. Improper fraction
In a proper fraction, the value of the numerator is always less than the value of the denominator
 
In an improper fraction, the value of the numerator is always greater than or equal to the value of the denominator.
 
Important!
  • An improper fraction can be expressed in mixed fraction form.
  • A mixed fraction can be expressed as an improper fraction by using the following conversion.
Improper fraction \(= \frac{(Whole × Denominator) + Numerator}{Denominator}\).
To find an equivalent fraction, use either of the following rules:
  • Multiply both the numerator and the denominator of the given fraction by the same number.
  • Divide both the numerator and the denominator of the given fraction by the same number.
Some special cases:
  1. Fractions with same denominators are called like fractions.
  2. Fractions with different denominators are called, unlike fractions.
