In our daily life, we use different units to measure length, mass, and capacity. Before comparing them or using ratios and proportions, we must first convert all the quantities into the same unit.

The Unit Conversion Stairs help us easily move up or down between these units - by multiplying or dividing by \(10\), \(100\), or \(1000\), just like climbing steps on a staircase.

Why do we convert units?
Ratios and proportions are meaningful only when the quantities are expressed in the same unit.
Example:
Compare 2 kg : 500 g

First, convert into same units.

\(2 \ kg = 2 \times 1000 \ g = 2000 \ g\)

Now, compare it.

\(2000 : 500 = 4 : 1\)

Thus, the ratio of \(2 \ kg : 500 \ g = 4 : 1\).
Now, let us see some other important unit conversions we used
Length

\(1\) metre \(=\) \(3.281\) feet

Area

\(1\) square metre \(=\) \(10.764\) square feet

\(1\) acre \(= 43,560\) square feet

\(1\) hectare \(=\) \(10,000\) square metres

\(1\) hectare \(=\) \(2.471\) acres

Volume

\(1\) millilitre (mL) \(=\) \(1\) cubic centimetre (cc)

\(1\) litre \(=\) \(1000\) (mL) or \(1000\) (cc)

Temperature

Temperature conversion between Fahrenheit and Celsius.

\(0^\circ = 32^\circ F\)

Fahrenheit \(=\) \(\frac{9}{5} \times\) Celsius \(+ 32\)

Celsius \(= \frac{5}{9} \times\) (Fahrenheit \(- 32\))
Important!
Always convert to the same unit before forming a ratio or solving a proportion.
