1. How would you distinguish experimentally between an alcohol and a carboxylic acid?

We can differentiate between alcohol and carboxylic acid by reacting them with sodium carbonates/sodium bicarbonates. The acid reacts with bicarbonate to give , which turns lime water milky.

\(CH_3COOH + NaHCO_3\rightarrow CH_3COONa + CO_2 + H_2\)

Whereas alcohol doesn't give any evolution of when reacted with carbonates.

\(CH_3CH_2OH + NaHCO_3\rightarrow No reaction\)

2. What are oxidising agents?

An oxidising agent often referred to as an oxidant, oxidiser, electron recipient, or electron acceptor, is any substance that another substance in a redox chemical reaction by "accepting" or "receiving" an from the other substance.

Example: Hydrogen peroxide, potassium permanganate, peroxides, chlorates, perchlorates, etc.
