Short Answer Questions:

1. Why detergents are better cleansing agents than soaps? Explain.

Soaps work better and more effectively in soft water and not in hard water. This happens because soap forms a residue (or scum) after reacting with and calcium ions in hard water. Detergents work well in soft and hard water because they do not form precipitate (or scum) even in hard water, as and magnesium salts are soluble. Hence, detergents form more lather and clean better than soaps.

(d). \(CH_3 CH_2 OH\) functional group .
