Physiological effects of ethylene:
  • Ethylene is a gas that promotes the ripening of fruits such as tomato, apple, mango, banana, etc.
  • It inhibits the elongation of the stem and root of dicots.
  • Ethylene accelerates the senescence of leaves and flowers.
  • It stimulates the formation of an abscission zone in leaves, flowers, and fruits, leading to premature shedding.
  • It breaks the dormancy of buds, seeds and storage organs.
