We disagreeagree with the statement that only variations that benefit an individual organism will survive in a population. All of the variations do have an equal chance of survival do not have an equal chance of survival  in the environment in which they find themselves. The nature of the variations determines the chances of survival. Different individuals would benefit in different ways. Bacteria plants and animals that can withstand heat will fare better in a heat wave. The revolutionary process is based on the selection of variants based on environmental factors.
