Take 6-8 metal bowls or tumblers. Fill them with water up to different levels, increasing gradually from one end to the other. Now take a pencil and strike the bowls gently. Strike all of them in succession. You will hear a pleasant sound. This is your Jaltrang.

When we strike the bowls with pencil gently, the water in the bowls is  are produced. These vibrations travel through water and the surroundings like air to create . The frequency or pitch of the sound  on the water level in the bowl.
 
When we strike all the bowls in succession,   is audible. This is a result of the water levels in the bowls varying.

So, we discover that the shorter the vibrating air column's length, the its pitch.
