The growing tips of stems and roots lateral sides of stems and rootsbase of inter-nodes contain apical meristems. Its primary role is to stimulate the development of new cells in young seedlings at the tips of roots, shoots, and growing buds. It helps to increases the elongation of the plantincrease the length of the stem and the rootsincreases the girth of stem and root. It acts as the promeristm having actively dividing cells giving rise to other new meristemsactively non-dividing cells cannot give rise to new meristems.
