The nuclear reactors that are used in different places are
  • Breeder reactor
  • Fast breeder reactor
  • Pressurized water reactor
  • Pressurized heavy water reactor
  • Boiling water reactor
  • Water-cooled reactor
  • Gas-cooled reactor
  • Fusion reactor
  • Thermal reactor
Uses of a Nuclear reactor:
• Nuclear reactors are mainly used for power generation.
• They are used to produce radioisotopes that are used in various applications.
• Nuclear reactors guides the research in the field of Nuclear Physics.
• Breeder reactors mainly helps to convert non-fissionable materials into fissionable materials.
Nuclear power plant:
Nuclear power plant helps to generate electrical energy from Nuclear energy.

Parts of nuclear power plant:
A nuclear power plant mainly consists of four units
  1. Nuclear reactor
  2. Heat exchanger
  3. Steam turbine
  4. Electric generator or dynamo
Working of a power plant:
The control rods are slowly lifted in the nuclear reactor until the reactor goes to the critical stage. Some amount of the heat energy produced in a reactor vaporises the molten sodium. The sodium vapours heat the water in the heat exchanger to convert water to steam.

Schematic diagram of power generation

The steam turns the turbine to convert heat energy into mechanical energy. The condensed steam in the turbine and liquefied sodium in the heat exchanger are circulated through pumps. The turbine is then coupled to an electric generator to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy.
