The plastics we use in our lifestyle also are made from polymers. All plastics do not have an equivalent sort of arrangement of units.
In some, the arrangement of a monomer is linear, and in others, the arrangement is cross-linked.
Types of plastics
Thermoplastics:
Crushed plastics for recycling
- These are plastics that deform their shape on exposure to heat. i.e. is these plastics can be reused by heating and can be moulded into different shapes.
- Thermoplastics are flexible in nature.
- These are expensive, softens when heated and are weak in nature.
- It is used in making toys, combs, water bottles, straws etc.
- Polythene, polyesters, and PVC are some examples for thermoplastics.
Thermosets:
Thermosetting plastics
- These are also called as thermosetting plastics.
- Thermosets are plastics that cannot be recycled.
- Thermosets cannot be moulded and reshaped.
- They are not flexible and break if force is applied.
- These are inexpensive and do not softens when heated.
- These are hard and poor conductors of heat and electricity.
- It is used as insulators in handles of cooking utensils, electrical switches etc.
- Bakelite, silicone, and melamine are some of examples for thermosets.
