Give reasons for the following.

a. Sodium and potassium are stored in kerosene.

Reason:

Both sodium and potassium have high reactivity. They are stored in kerosene because they react with air and water.
Sodium and potassium are stored in kerosene because they do not dissolve in kerosene.
Kerosene is a solvent. When we store sodium and potassium in kerosene, their reactivity increases.

b. Mercury is used in thermometers.

It is used in thermometers and barometers because it is liquid at room temperature.
It is used in thermometers and barometers since it has high density and uniform expansion at different temperatures.
Since mercury has lustre property, it is used in thermometers.
