Clouds
Clouds are an accumulation of tiny water droplets/ice particles that are so small and light in weight. Clouds are formed by microscopic drops of water or by tiny ice crystals.
The white colour of the cloud is due to tiny water droplets tightly packed inside them, reflecting most of the sunlight that hits them. The size of the droplets usually ranges from a few microns to\(\ 100\ microns\). This is the limit beyond which cloud drops become raindrops.

According to their height, clouds are classified into the following types
  • High clouds (\(6-20km\ \)Height)
  • Middle clouds (\(2.5km-6km\ \)Height)
  • Low clouds (\(ground\ surface\ to\ 2.5\ km\ \)height)
Based on the shape and structure, these major types of clouds are further divided into different types.
High clouds
  • Cirrus: These are white delicate fibrous silky filaments of detached clouds  formed at the high sky (\(8000\ meters\ to\ 12000\ meters\)). These are often called 'mares tails'. These clouds have Ice crystals and are dry, and do not give rainfall.
  • Cirro-cumulus: White patched, sheet or layer like clouds composed of ice crystals. This appears as white globular masses, forming ripples in a 'mackerel sky'.
  • Cirro-stratus: Smooth milky transparent whitish clouds composed of tiny ice crystals. The sun or moon shines through it with a characteristic 'halo'.

Middle clouds
  • Alto-stratus: Thin sheets of dense, grey or blue coloured clouds in uniform appearance with a watery look consisting of frozen water droplets
  • Alto-cumulus: These are woolly, bumpy clouds fitted closely together in parallel bands, called as 'Sheep clouds' or woolpack clouds.
  • Nimbo stratus: These are clouds of dark & dull coloured and clearly layered. They are very close to the ground surface associated with rain, snow or sleet. They are also known as 'rain cloud'.
Low clouds
  • Strato-cumulus: Grey or whitish layer of non-fibrous low (rough & bumpy) clouds found in rounded patches at the height of \(2500\ to\ 3000\ metres\), associated with fair or clear weather.
  • Stratus: Fog-like dense, low lying clouds associated with rain or snow
  • Cumulus: This is a vertical cloud with a rounded top ( Dome-shaped) and horizontal base (flat) resembling a cauliflower, typical of humid tropical regions, associated with the rising convectional current. This cloud is often associated with fair weather.
  • Cumulo-nimbus: Fluffy thick (overgrown cumulus cloud) towering thunderstorm cloud capable of producing heavy rain, snow, hailstorm or tornadoes.
