There is perhaps nothing which so occupies the middle position of mathematics as trigonometry.
- J.F. Herbart
A French mathematician, Francois Viete applied trigonometry in Algebra to solve some equations by using appropriate trigonometric substitutions. The Canon mathematicus [Canon, \(1579\)] is his first published work. This book provides trigonometric tables computed to \(9\) decimal places, and a systematic collection of trigonometric formulas. This volume was not included in his collected works due to several misprints and a misunderstanding with the editor.

Francois Viete is known as "the father of modern algebra".
We had already learned about right triangles in previous classes. The extension concept of a right triangle is "Trigonometry". The lengths or heights between any two objects can be calculated using mathematical procedures that fall under the category of trigonometry.

Around \(200\) BC(BCE), Hipparchus of Rhodes constructed a table of chord lengths for a circle of circumference \(360 × 60 = 21600\) units, which corresponds to one unit of circumference for each minute of arc. This achievement of Hipparchus became the basis for further development.
