As we already discussed in the introduction of this chapter, health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Eating a healthy diet keeps the body physically and mentally fit. When a person is physically healthy, the person will feel more confident.

Unhealthy food habits or diets lead to various illnesses like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and mental stress that prevent people from socialising with friends and family.
Balanced Diet:
A diet should thus contain an adequate amount of all the nutrients required for healthy growth and activity. A balanced diet contains a sufficient amount of different nutrients that ensure good health.
A food plan consisting of a combination of all kinds of vitamins, mineralsproteins, carbohydrates, and fats to make a person healthy and get all the benefits and essential nutrients is called a balanced diet.

The food taken should also provide the necessary amount of energy and water. Balanced diet aids in:
  • An increased capacity to work
  • Proper physical and mental health
  • Enhanced capacity to resist diseases
  • It helps in the proper growth of the body
Important!
Nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals, fats are highly essential to make a person healthy and balance a meal. These are the major nutrients of a meal. In addition to it, we also need dietary fibres and water to make the absorption of all the nutrients easier.
Points to note:
  • One must reduce the cooking time of vitamin C rich food because it can lead to loss of vitamins. Hence, we should eat vitamin C rich food naturally without processing.
  •
  • Some vitamins and minerals could be lost if we wash vegetables like carrot and ladies' fingers after cutting them into pieces or peeling off their skin. Instead, try to wash those vegetables first and then cut them into pieces so that you may get the most out of those vegetables.
  •
  • Carbohydrates and fats provide energy. In order to be energetic, one cannot eat French fries, rice and cakes so that they can be energetic. It is unhealthy as it increases blood glucose levels and will lead to various heart diseases and other complications.
